April is earth month where the big clean up and the tree planting begins.  Take some time out of our regular hustle and bustle of every day life and start your clean up and planting. Rather if it’s recycling, gardening or composting you’re starting and thats a beginning. 

Let’s take trees for an example. Trees are like superhero’s. Without trees there wouldn’t be enough oxygen for us to stay alive. That’s right trees are like magical oxygen machines. They take in carbon dioxide, which is what we breathe out and turn it into oxygen. Trees also help clean the air, provides a habitat for animals and protects the soil. Trees also have great shade for cooling and also yummy fruits and nuts like,  bananas, apples, oranges and almonds.


Michigan is a great state for growing apple, peach and pear trees.  Then,  there’s the maple tree too. When planting trees decide what’s best for you. You might be thinking about having fresh maple syrup so you will need to plant a Sugar maple tree. Walnut, almond or pecan trees.

Consider planting trees that will produce food to help off set the high prices of groceries and to help you to be more self sustaining. 

Research what grows best in your area. Climates, soil or even how long it would take to produce nuts or fruits.  Now let’s talk about how some trees acid will affect gardens. A black walnut tree planted close to tomato plants will cause tomato wilt.  

 

Wood ash is great for your garden. Wood ash contains various nutrients like potassium, calcium and magnesium.  Cautions all good things should be used in moderations, excessive amounts could cause harm to your plants. 

Don’t use treated wood because of being toxic. So recycling your trees and repurposing it into a fertilizer for your garden.  

You can also make potassium hydroxide by soaking the wood ash in water to make soap. The craziest things that you can make all out of trees. 

Wood chips for smoking and preserving foods or even used for flavoring homemade whiskey. 

Sap that comes from pine trees also be used for glue and wood sealer.
